2024 Season Announcement

Steel City Strings is thrilled to announce an exciting 2024 Season Program.

A new year will bring 3 carefully curated programs to delight all concert goers who love string music.

Program 1 – “Identity” tells the story of human nature and the amazing ability within all of us to create beauty even in circumstances where our very identity is questioned and put to the test.

  • Noveletten No.1  by Samuel Coleridge- Taylor
  • Intermezzo for String Orchestra by Franz Schreker
  • Romance, Op. 11 by Gerald Finzi
  • Elegy fpr String Orchestra by FS Kelly
  • Suite in E major for string orchestra Op. 1a by Ethyl Smyth

Program 2 – “Reel Music” For the first time, SCS turns to the art of composition for the screen to celebrate its breadth of scope and ambition. Work by Australian composer John Spence (Riptide) will take its place among selections from scores from major films which have highlight strings performance, such as Cinema Paradiso, Psycho, The Shawshank Redemption, Cloud Atlas, and Hamlet. A new work will be commissioned from renowned film composer Lauren Mercovich (Every Picture) and a local actor will be engaged to act as an MC and perform selected monologues from featured films.

Program 3 – “Choral Riffs” For our final concerts of the year, we will collaborate with local chamber choir con voci and the WollCon Chamber Choir to present a program which melds choral and strings work, to move, inspire and provoke. A new commission for strings and choir by composer Sally Whitwell will be the centerpiece of the concert, supported by works by Faure, Wilson, and other masters of the craft of blending the melodics of voice and strings.

In Debussy's Sacred and Profane Dances of 1904 the orchestra was joined by harpist Paulina Smirnov whose scintillating playing created a wonderful and subtly-nuanced centrepiece for the concert.

A fascinating program of works from various musical periods... The orchestra played with a strong sense of ensemble, and brought an infectious verve to the Mozart.
