Tell us about yourself, when did your musical journey begin and what initially sparked your interest in classical music?

“Music has been a part of my life ever since I was young – our house was always full of classical CDs. The Chime class at the con was also one of my first experiences with music and really set the stage, so to speak, for my interest in classical music.”

Who gave you your first instrument or performance opportunity? How did you enjoy your first time in the performance limelight?

“I first started playing music when I was around 6, my parents took me to my first Piano lesson. I started playing violin a few years later when I was 8. I remember being so nervous for my first performance and the tremendous exhilaration when I was performing. There’s nothing quite like it.”

Where are you at right now with your musical journey?

“At the moment I’m currently working on my Lmus repertoire something which is both challenging and rewarding. I’ve also recently come back from Bluescope youth orchestra tour where we toured around regional youth orchestra. Besides this I often like to go busking with my friends on the odd occasion which I think is a really great way to share our music and play together in an informal environment.”

Where do you see yourself in the future playing music? Do you have a dream performance venue or orchestra to play with in the future, or are you just simply enjoying the moment and seeing where music takes you?!

“Although I don’t plan on taking on music as a career, I would always want music to be a part of my life in some way shape or form. At this point I hope to be able to join a professional orchestra after I graduate school but I’m always open to new experiences and really just trying to enjoy the moment and see where music takes me.”

Who is your favourite artist that plays your instrument and why?

“My favourite artist would have to be Joshua Bell. I really admire his vivacity and his attention to detail, something which I have tried to integrate into my playing. I also love his expression, and the sense of authority he commands when he plays.”

Tell us about what you will be performing with Steel City Strings. Is your piece significant to you on a personal or musical level? What drew you to performing this music with Steel City Strings?

“I will be playing Vivaldi’s concerto for 2 violins in a minor with Kyle Little. I’ve listened to this piece ever since I was young so I’m really excited to be able to play it with the Steel City Strings. Vivaldi is one of my favourite composers, especially for violin. I really enjoy his works for violin for their virtuosity, something that similarly drew me to this duet.”

In Debussy's Sacred and Profane Dances of 1904 the orchestra was joined by harpist Paulina Smirnov whose scintillating playing created a wonderful and subtly-nuanced centrepiece for the concert.

A fascinating program of works from various musical periods... The orchestra played with a strong sense of ensemble, and brought an infectious verve to the Mozart.
