Steel City Strings Wins in the 2019 Art Music Awards

We are delighted to announce that Steel City Strings have been awarded the prestigious national Art Music Award for Excellence in a Regional Area, in recognition of our activities in 2018 and our continued commitment to new Australian music. We are thrilled that our support for regional, local and established Australian composers has been recognised and that our amazing year in 2018 with the launch of the documentary The Passion of Music and all three outstanding concerts has been acknowledged.

We also congratulate the three other finalists in our category.

Winners were announced today across 11 national categories and eight state categories of the 2019 Art Music Awards at a gala function at the Great Hall of the University of Sydney.

Hosted by Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) and the Australian Music Centre (AMC), the Art Music Awards are the only national event in Australia to acknowledge the extraordinary achievements and creative successes of Australian composers, performers and educators in the genres of contemporary classical music, jazz and experimental music. The winners in 2019 include some of Australia’s most innovative artists, and organisations with a long-term commitment to Australian art music.

In Debussy's Sacred and Profane Dances of 1904 the orchestra was joined by harpist Paulina Smirnov whose scintillating playing created a wonderful and subtly-nuanced centrepiece for the concert.

A fascinating program of works from various musical periods... The orchestra played with a strong sense of ensemble, and brought an infectious verve to the Mozart.
