Steel City Strings Founders Retire

Yve and Lyndall just announced their retirement from Steel City Strings from the end of 2026.
Ten years ago, together with a group of local musicians, they established the string ensemble, choosing the name as an acknowledgement of its base in the city of Wollongong in NSW. While Yve and Lyndall are proud of SCS achievements, they feel it is time to step back.
They leave a significant legacy.
As its audiences can attest, Steel City Strings has become a beloved part of the cultural life of the Illawarra region of NSW. Its players are drawn from local professional musicians as well guest artists from around Australia. It specialises in commissioning new works from Australian composers as part of its annual programming.
The orchestra will continue its concert program into 2026 with the first concert themed by Artistic Director Adrian Davis, around the concept of “Home”. The program will explore what that idea means through music — for listeners and for the orchestra itself as it enters a new chapter.
The program will include two new commissions by Australian composers Barry Conyngham and Adriel Sukumar, as well as works from Andrew Ford, Antonin Dvorak, Felix Mendelssohn and Elena Kats-Chernin.
Book now for the Wollongong concert on 21 March 2026 or the Berry concert on 22 March 2026.
