Tell us about yourself, when did your musical journey begin and what initially sparked your interest in classical music?

“I started playing piano when I was around 5 but soon quit and began my violin journey when I was 8 years old, immediately i found it much easier than piano and continued throughout the past 6, almost 7 years. The thought of performing in front of people has always really excited me, watching violinists perform such as Ray Chen, Hilary Hahn etc sparked my interest in classical music and motivated me.”

Who gave you your first instrument or performance opportunity? How did you enjoy your first time in the performance limelight?

“I was given my first 1/4 violin by my mum when I was 8 and soon after received my 1/2 size by my dad. The first time I performed was in Wollongong Wesley Church, when I attended my first violin eisteddfod at 9 years old, ever since then I have taken almost every performance opportunity I have been given as I truly enjoy playing in front of an audience.”

Where are you at right now with your musical journey?

“I am currently working towards my AMEB AMusA exam, I am 14 turning 15 and studying in year 10 at school and am part of the first violin section in BlueScope Youth Orchestra.”

Where do you see yourself in the future playing music? Do you have a dream performance venue or orchestra to play with in the future, or are you just simply enjoying the moment and seeing where music takes you?!

“I am looking forward to seeing where violin will take me in the future, I would love to experience more performance opportunities with orchestras and ensembles.”

Who is your favourite artist that plays your instrument and why?

“My favourite violinist is Itzhak Perlman, his playing inspired me greatly especially with his delicacy and style in his classical pieces and the way he expresses himself through his more romantic pieces, his performances have an incredible warm ring and have brought my family and I joy listening to him.”

Tell us about what you will be performing with Steel City Strings. Is your piece significant to you on a personal or musical level? What drew you to performing this music with Steel City Strings?

“I will be performing Mozart Violin Concerto no.5 in A major K219. It is quite significant to my musical level. Playing with Steel City Strings was very appealing and exciting to me as I’ve never played as a soloist of an orchestra or ensemble in front of an audience (only ever been accompanied by piano).”

Richard Gill AO

In Debussy's Sacred and Profane Dances of 1904 the orchestra was joined by harpist Paulina Smirnov whose scintillating playing created a wonderful and subtly-nuanced centrepiece for the concert.

A fascinating program of works from various musical periods... The orchestra played with a strong sense of ensemble, and brought an infectious verve to the Mozart.
